Pinterest, Quizlet and Emaze, Oh my!
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will explore how to use three free online resources for teachers: pinterest, quizlet, and emaze.  Pinterest is an online social media board with millions of teacher ideas appropriate for any grade level or content area.  Quizlet is a website teachers or students can use to create flashcards with various study options and a smartphone component for students to be able to access the flashcards from their phones.  Emaze is a new web based presentation software that allows teachers to spice up notes presentations and works cooperatively with already created power point presentations or provides 3D and motion oriented templates to create new presentations. This session will include time to experiment with all three sites, so attendees will need a laptop.

PBIS - Practices that Work At All Levels!
Limited Capacity seats available

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports is a school-wide, positive, discipline framework that improves behavioral and academic outcomes in students.  PBIS consists of evidence-based practices, built on common behavioral principles.  These practices look different from school to school.
Sixteen elementary and secondary schools in SCCSD are in some phase of PBIS implementation.  This session provides an excellent opportunity for team members and staff in schools implementing PBIS to review the basic principles behind the practices, share ideas for what is working in their school and get new ideas about what is working in other schools.  This session also provides an excellent opportunity for those staff not involved in a PBIS school to learn more about these practices from local schools and how they might apply to their schools or classrooms.

English 2 Developing Power Standards
The term power standards refers to a subset of learning standards that educators have determined to be the highest priority or most important for students to learn. In most cases, power standards are developed or selected at the school level by administrators and teachers.

On a practical level, it is often impossible for teachers to cover every academic standard over the course of a school year, given the depth and breadth of state learning standards.Power standards, therefore, are the prioritized academic expectations that educators determine to be the most critical and essential for students to learn, and—in schools that use power standards—courses and learning experiences are designed to emphasize power-standards content and ensure that, at the very least, students learn the content specified in the power standards.

It is important to note that power standards do not preclude the teaching of other standards—they merely determine the highest-priority material. For this reason, power standards may be limited to only a handful of standards, but these standards will typically require students to acquire and demonstrate strong understanding of a complex subject or sophisticated skill.

Motivating and Engaging Students: It Can Be Done in the Secondary Classroom

Who are these students who occupy space in the classroom?  Some days it seems as though they come from another universe.   How do educators motivate middle and high school students?  How can they engage students in their own learning? Teachers need to get to know their students, learn a little about how their brain works, and examine their pedagogy in order to get the most out of the instructional time together in the classroom and beyond.  Join this interactive session to help you effectively reach and teach students in the secondary classroom.
